Bemidji Community Education
About Us

Staff Greetings
What Is It?
It's all about building a "Life-Long Learning System." This system is built through a process approach utilizing a citizen advisory council. The council assesses and identifies community needs, then links school and/or community facilities and resources to meet those needs. Examples of programs established and evolving to meet ever-changing needs are:
1. Adult Basic Education 5. Activities for the Disabled
Plus GED Test Center 6. School Age Child Care
2. Aquatics 7. Enrichment classes, activities and trips
3. Early Childhood Family Education 8. Youth Services/Sports
4. Family Learning
Mission
Our mission is to provide a continually improving life-long learning program that compliments and supports school district and community learning efforts. We envision every community member as both a learner in the system and a resource to it. Community Education will act as a catalyst to learn, lead and link.

History and Goals
Starting in Flint, Michigan, during the depression, community education is now in all 50 states in the United States and many countries around the world. Every school district in Minnesota offers this program through special legislation providing financial support and public school supervision and accountability promoting these three goals:
1. To provide life-long learning opportunities to all members of the community.
2. To promote and develop support for the K-12 program.
3. To build strong communities that allow citizens to achieve their greatest potential.
Advisory Council
Advisory Council is a 16-member cross sectional community representative group. By state statutes this council has direct input into the budget, program and process. For additional information contact Lynn Tchida at 218-333-3100 ext 301
