Bemidji Community Education hosts
Northwest Spring ABE Regional.
Nearly 50 Adult Basic Education (ABE) managers, teachers and support staff from across the northwest portion of Minnesota converged on
Bemidji this week, taking part in the Northwest Spring 2008 Regional Conference. The event was held at the Bemidji Area Schools district offices located in the Paul Bunyan Center.
The Northwest Spring Regional was a training opportunity for ABE teachers and those who administer GED tests. The two day event was
offered in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Education and the ATLAS program through Hamline University.
Day one of the event featured sessions that were designed to address teacher licensure requirements. Included were
presentations on "Learning Vocabulary Acquisition" and and "becoming Culturally Aware Teachers and Learners."
Day two of the regional was geared toward English as a Second Language, ABE/GED and technology related matters.
Sessions included "Teaching Multi-level Classes" and "Computer Confidence for Educators."
"I believe the conference went very well," said Lynn Tchida, Bemidji Community Education Director. "The sessions
provided some very valuable continuing education opportunities for teachers from across the region. We were excited
to take a lead role in sponsoring the event and look forward to offering additional educational opportunities in the future."
